| Right, I decided to write this because I just got an ASUS eeePC 900 as a birthday gift from my wife. It's the 16GB Linux version. I'm not a Linux fan so I imediately proceeded to changing to Windows XP following many instructions found online. 6 hours later I had XP running on the machine. I wasn't very pleased: it was slow, many times the computer just froze for a bit and then restarted and all in all it was quite dissapointing. So the next day I went to the computer shop and bought a 2 GB RAM memory module and a 16GB memory card for the SD slot. Armed with these I got a Windows Vista kit, made a bootable USB stick (much easier than the sluggish process of obtaining an XP bootable memory stick) and proceeded to install Vista on the little laptop. I've read hundreds of accounts on the internet about Vista being a nono for such a low end configuration, but I knew better. Now, three days later I can say Vista flies on the machine (compared to XP at least). No freezing occurs, Office 2007 runs as smooth as anywhere and I'm very pleased with what the Asus eeePC 900 can do with vista. The only downside is that you need 2GB of RAM (didn't try with only 1, but it can't be as good) and at least a 16GB memory card, as your SSD will be almost full with Vista. If you want to install Vista, here's a few tips: 1. Get 2GB of RAM for the machine - it's a small investment (got mine for about 18EUR) 2. Get a memory card for your SD slot (the bigger the better) - equally small investment 3. Once you have Vista installed, clear up some space on SSD by deleting the hibernation file (open up command prompt, type: "powercfg -h off". This will clear up space equal to the amount of RAM you have (2GB in my case). 4. Reduce the size of your pagefile (if you don't know how to do this, probably it's better you don't try, so I won't post how to do that here) Enjoy Vista on your eeePC 900 - amazing how many experts are against this configuration which works much better than XP. |
